When we think about ultrasound, it's easy to focus on the machine itself - the probe, the images + trying to identify what we're looking for on the screen.

But one of the biggest factors in getting a good ultrasound scan actually happens before the probe even touches the patient.

Good preparation makes a huge difference!

As veterinary nurses, we're often heavily involved in preparing patients for imaging, and the little things we do can make the entire procedure smoother, quicker, and much more diagnostic.

✨ Why do we clip ultrasound patients?

One of the most common questions from is owners is: "do you really need to shave them?"

The answer is almost always yes.

Ultrasound works using sound waves + air is the enemy of good image quality.

Hair traps tiny pockets of air between the probe + the skin, which prevents those sound waves from travelling properly.

Clipping the area allows us to:

• Improve image quality
• Reduce artefacts
• Help the clinician obtain more accurate information
• Reduce the need for repeat scans

Again, it comes back to air.

Ultrasound gel fills in those tiny air gaps between the probe + the patient's skin.

Without gel, the sound waves struggle to pass through + the image quaility can become poor very quickly.

A generous amount of gel can make all the difference.

Even small movements can affect image quality.

Unlike radiography, ultrasound is happening in real time. The person scanning is often trying to examine tiny structures while simultaneously interpreting what they're seeing.

Movement can:

• Blur the image 
• Make structures harder to identify
• Increase scan time
• Cause measurements to be inaccurate

Some patients tolerate this really well, while others may need extra support of sedation.

Patient positioning can completely change what structures are visible.

Depending on the area being scanned, patients may need to be:

• In dorsal recumbency
• In lateral recumbency
• Standing

Good positioning helps:

• Keep the patient comfortable
• Improve image quality
• Allow the sonographer to scan efficiently
• Reduce stress for everyone involved

Ultrasound is definitely a team effort.. as veterinary nurses, we often:

• Prepare equipment
