The five main functions of the digestive tract are:

Ingestion simply means taking food into the body.

This is the first stage of digestion and starts when the animal eats.

In veterinary patients, changes in ingestion can be really important. A reduced appetite, difficulty chewing, drooling, dropping food or refusing certain textures may suggest pain, nausea, dental disease or another underlying problem.

Food needs to be broken down before the body can use it. This happens through both mechanical and chemical digestion.

Mechanical digestion includes things like chewing and stomach movement.

For example:

  • Carbohydrates are broken down into simple sugars
  • Proteins are broken down into amino acids
  • Fats are broken down into fatty acids and glycerol

The aim of digestion is to make nutrients small enough for the body to absorb.

Once food has been broken down, the useful nutrients need to move from the digestive tract into the body.

  • Diarrhoea

  • Colour
  • Presence of blood or mucus
  • Straining
  • Diarrhoea or constipation

In practice, faecal output is a really useful nursing observation, especially in hospitalised patients.
